Put the power of the Obama campaign posters towards your own use...

Obamicon.ME and others
giving the power of the poster
to the people!

Like those really cool Obama campaign posters made by Shepard Fairey? Want to make one of your own?

You are in luck!

No Photoshop skills are required to make your very own Obama/Fairey style posters over at Obamicon.me. The site hosted by Paste Magazine allows you to upload any image (or use a web/phone cam) smaller than 4mb, and they will instantly turn it into Obama inspired pop art with the click of your mouse. How cool is that! Obamicon.me allows you to download your creations and post them in a gallery with everyone elses. Of course some photoshop skills will still come in handy as they recomend .png or .gif files with transparent backgrounds for the best effect.

Additionally there are a couple of other options available on the net.

Obamafy is a photo booth plug-in from Dubi Kaufmann and is available for download here: http://www.dubster.com/obamafy/ It is only available for Mac's OS X 10.5 Leopard, so PC users don't even think about it....

VECTORTUTS has a nice tutorial by Zach Wentz
Creating an inspirational political poster.
"This tutorial is inspired by Sheppard Fairey's famous political poster series for the Obama campaign in the US. We'll be showing you how to create this style of design. We'll start with basic image editing techniques in Photoshop to get our guide layers setup, and then we'll jump into Illustrator. You don't need any fancy equipment to do this. I used an older mouse that still has the rubber ball."

Finally University of Washington's in the studio blog gives some alternate advice based on the VECTORTUTS tutorial but with a little more thought about the art rather than just trying to automate the process. In How to emulate the iconic Obama poster, Part II Author DavidW notes "One detail that I noticed about Fairey’s poster was his use of both hard lines and curves. That is, Obama’s features aren’t exclusively represented with rounded shapes, nor exclusively sharp-edged shapes. There’s a mix. I think that mix really speaks both to Fairey’s artistic eye and ability to communicate such emotion with relatively little (just colors and shapes)." To this end he goes on to explain his process to achieving a successful Fairey/Obama style poster.

Flickr has one of the best collections of Obamicon and other Obama/Fairey inspired posters, here are a few...

Free Memory

Free Memory

Tips & Tricks

for
Adobe Photoshop

The Purge command lets you free memory used by the Undo command, the History palette, or the clipboard.

Choose Edit > Purge, and choose the item type or buffer you want to clear. If it is already empty, the item type or buffer is dimmed.

Note: The Purge command permanently clears from memory the operation stored by the command or buffer; Purge cannot be undone. For example, choosing Edit > Purge > Histories deletes all history states from the History palette. Use the Purge command when the amount of information in memory is so large that Photoshop performance is noticeably affected.

Perfect Portraits Tutorial

Super Airbrush Post-Processing Tutorial

Dan Chips has put together a fine tutorial on airbrushing portraits in Photoshop. It is easy to follow and reproduce. View it here: Super Airbrush PP Tutorial!

"Hello everyone! I thought I would put this tutorial together, as it seems every time I post an image that I have processed in this way, everyone wants to know how I did it. Rather than explain every time, I thought I would give something back to the community and submit my own tutorial. I hope some of you out there find it useful." -Dan Chips.

One of the most popular tutorials to come out of the Canon oriented POTN message board. You can no longer find the original posting there, along with 30+ pages of ongoing discussion about refinements and modifications to the original technique Dan offered. Well worth the read, hopefully it will return soon.

Canon's DPP Updated to 3.0.2

Canon's
Digital Photo Professional (DPP)

Free Software to unleash
the RAW power of the EOS Digital SLR

Canon Inc. has just released the latest update to their free RAW processing and workflow software DPP. Version 3.0.2 replaces 3.0.1.5 and includes a major update for Windows Vista and a couple of minor fixes for Mac and non-Vista users.

I generally shoot in RAW format, and I rely heavily on the DPP program. With the release of Version 3 Canon has given its customers a fantastic tool for free. I can often achieve fantastic results processing my RAW images in DPP and never have to adjust them in PhotoShop.

The ability to shoot RAW images is a feature of higher
end cameras and allows for you to have all the raw sensor data from the digital camera without the camera making any automated image enhancements like it would to make a .Jpg image.

This RAW file really is raw data, think of it like a film negative, and must be processed in conversion
software and made into a .Jpg or .tiff file.

This conversion software allows me to make decisions on brightness, tone, contrast, color temperature,
color saturation, and grain sharpness. By allowing me to make these decisions I can fine tune my pictures, often far better than the logic built into the camera.

Canon in addition to providing the RAW software DPP provides a detailed 106
page user manual, and goes one better providing intensive online tutorials that are easy to understand with video examples by world class photographers and Canon reps.

Unfortunately Canon's Digital Photo Professional will only work with RAW files generated by its EOS line of Digital SLR's. For those with RAW files generated by Canon p&s cameras like the G6 or other manufactures RAW files they will sadly not work with DPP.

Canon's DPP software can be downloaded here:
Digital Photo Professional 3.0.2

The DPP manual (106 pages) is here:
support page
